James Oglethorpe
James Oglethorpe was born on December 22, 1696 in London, England. His friend was jailed with a man with smallpox. He died and Oglethorpe began to try to reform all prisons. As a result of his persuasive arguments he was named as one of the 21 trustees to govern Georgia. He allowed many different races to enter the colonies.
Charter of 1732
This charter was made by the king as a way to keep the trustees under control. It was composed of 6,000 words! The charter was full of restrictions to the trustees like they could not own land or make any money off of the colony that they controlled.
Reasons for settlement
They settled Georgia for three main reasons. Charity, Economics, and defense were those reasons. Charity meant giving to the poor and unfortunate like those who lost jobs and robbed to keep their family's alive. Economics meant earning money for the king. Defense meant protecting South-Carolina from the Spanish because it was a huge money making machine for England.
Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove, and the city of Savannah
Tomochichi (below) was the leader of the Yamacraw Indians. He was befriended by James Oglethorpe because of the very helpful translator Mary Musgrove. She may as well have made Georgia because she helped so much with it. Tomochichi trusted Oglethorpe and gave him Yamacraw bluff which is today known as Savannah.
